The name of the community is Barcelona. Barcelona was
founded in 1992 and was named after the Olympic Games
in Barcelona, Spain in the same year. It was the first
Olympic Games that South African athletes were allowed
to take part in after the fall of "apartheid".
Ubuntu:
The word Ubuntu comes from bishop Tutu and it means: I am because we are. We exist in a group, if one member of the group does not feel well, the whole group does not feel well.
Who we are:
At the very moment Barcelona consists of around 2000 shacks. According to the chairman of Barcelona, Tony, on average in each house lives 6 people, 4 of them are children. It is estimated that the percentage HIV pos is around 27% although this is not a scientific fact. This number comes from maternity clinics where expectant mothers can choose to get HIV tested.
25% of them refuses a test, so the real amount of HIV pos people, according to the maternity hospital, in this area is still a mystery. But if you look around, and see these houses, poverty is not a mystery. BBecause of poverty HIV and TB, and the stigma around all, it is very hard for parents to take care of their children. That is where we come in and try to assist, guide and listen. |

Our Mission: |
|
| |
Empowering families to be resilient is covered in our objectives, as we can find them in our constitution.
To make the family a strong unit, so the children will be educated, resilient and caring people.
To encourage parents to be caring and supportive of their families.
To create awareness about HIV/AIDS and TB in the communtiy.
To support children with skill development, like sport, singing and drama.
To assist care givers/ families in raising their child.
To create a safety net around vulnerable children and orphans, eg., finding - and supporting places of safety in emergencies, and establishing youth - and other clubs.
To strengthen the Christian value of caring in the community of Barcelona.
How we give body to such a comprehensive mission:
The most important thing we do is including our community in playing their role in our organisation. |

| |
|
| |
What we do: |
|
| |
The community shows us their needs and we try to give an answer to their needs, and in their turn the community is answering us by giving assistance and support to the organisation. The Ubuntu board consists of capable people all living in the community. Most staff members are living in the community.
We developed a variety of activities, from:
- a breakfast club for children who normally go to school without a breakfast, to a child support group fro vulnerable children
- a drama club, lead by themselves, the program created by themselves, supervised by a staff member.
- a gospel choir, a soccer club, and a teenager group.
- a safety mother.
Our safety mother takes care of children who all of a sudden need a safe place, when their mother unexpectedly has to go to a hospital or when the caregiver is not available to take care of their child.
We organise workshops for the soccer boys and their parents for life skills, we organised workshops in the community for mothers with young children. We support families with food parcels, bus fare to and from hospitals, bus fare to go to school, school fees and uniforms and in emergency cases we do give formula and food for babies and toddlers. We also refer people for counselling, advising in getting grants, for formula. Or in case of abuse we assist and encourage them to report their case.
We are a Christian organisation and the breakfast group is reading out of the children's bible and sometimes we pray with our people. The Christian value is kept high by not judging people and not rejecting people when they ask for assistance, like alcoholics or somebody who did not follow up our advice and is hungry or needs to go to hospital, we still give them food or transport money and try to answer the needs.
